A Waterford Township man arrested last month for operating under the influence of liquor and driving on a suspended/revoked license has eight prior suspensions and nine drunken driving convictions.
In any given year, about 300,000 of Michigan’s 7.2 million licensed drivers have their driving privileges suspended. Studies show that about 70 percent continue to drive anyway.
An argument can be made that the names, photos, addresses, and license numbers of individuals with suspended drivers licenses should be made public on the Internet. Citizens who spot suspended drivers on the road can report them to police as well as post the report on the Internet.
Either the police will take immediate action, or after a repeated pattern of failure to act, the voters will take political action.
